909 South Staffordshire scent bottle with the portrait of lady Chambers after Reynolds / Flacone con il ritratto di Lady Chambers, da Reynolds

So called South Staffordshire scent bottle, painted with the portrait of Lady Catherine Chambers (née More) after Joshua Reynolds who painted her in 1756; possibly from an engrave by Richard Purcell; on the back a bouquet of flowers . Kate Foster in her book "Scent Bottles" says:" Most of these different types of decoration were made on a coloured ground with gilt scroll borders to the Rococo panels, and often with white enamel diaper or florette on the ground. To produce the right texture of gilding, the crushed gold leaf had to be mixed with honey..." Many of these enamel bottles were copied, mainly by Samson but the quality of the work is coarse.   England, 1760 ca    8 cm

Flacone smaltato, cosiddetto South Staffordshire, dipinto con il ritratto di Lady Catherine Chambers (nata More) da Joshua Reynolds che la dipinse nel 1756; forse da un'incisione di Richard Purcell; sul retro un mazzo di fiori. Kate Foster nel suo libro "Scent Bottles" dice: "La maggior parte di questi diversi tipi di decorazioni sono state realizzate su una base colorata con bordi dorati ai pannelli rococò e spesso sono decorati con motivi geometrici o floreali smaltati bianchi. Per produrre la giusto consistenza della doratura, la foglia d'oro schiacciata doveva essere mescolata con il miele ...Molte di queste bottiglie di smalto sono state copiate, principalmente da Samson, ma la qualità del lavoro è grossolana".
